Hiroyuki NAKAJIMA Moon

Theme

The theme of my exhibition and performance is "moon".
Moon is more suggestive than sun. Moon changes its own shape day by day gradually and repeats being full and waning periodically. For me, it looks like that <light> and <shadow> attack each other on the moon every night. And the strained relation between <light> and <shadow> seems to represent positive and negative, passion and tranquility, substance and shadow, that also reminds me of life and death. It is my desire to express the recognition that all phenomena in the world occur in mutual relations of two contrary elements each other. Japanese character for "moon" is modeled after the shape of moon floating in the night sky. When I face a white screen, the impressions of moon come one after the other in my mind. I do not draw the shape of moon realistically. My work is the expression of how my heart has moved by the impressions of moon, using Japanese character for "moon" as a material.

Exhibition

My presentation consists of drawings on paper and video works in monitor. In the exhibition, 6 pieces (150x300cm) of drawing "moon" are hung on the wall of the church. Each drawing is arranged with each video monitor. The scene of drawing is shown in this monitor all the time. I regard my action itself is one of my expression. Viewers can appreciate both drawings and scenes of making at the same time. I visited the 59th Avignon festival last year. The city was in intense heat and din, but the inside of the church was filled with tranquility and coolness in contrast with outside. It seemed to me like an oasis for my meditation in the festival. I also wish the church would be a cozy oasis for viewers. It is my desire that viewer can refresh themselves physically and mentally, then feel the sense of "moon" in the church.

Performance

In the performance, I make a drawing "moon" on large paper which size is 150cm wide and 350cm long. I make one piece at one night through the performance, feeling the influence of the present moon. I continue to make piece one by one every night. Each piece is hung in the air and finally the installation of moon is finished in twelve nights. 12 pieces of drawings "moon" are arranged in three dimensions in the domed space of the church. Viewers are able to appreciate my works as if moon is moving in celestial sphere. It is my desire that 12 pieces would reflect the atmosphere of the festival and how my heart has moved by the impressions of the moon.
